Teenage Mutants: This year our label has the focus

Teenage Mutants, the artist and producer duo hailing from Germany, have carved a unique niche within the techno music scene with their innovative \”Techno With Drama\” approach. Comprising Christian and Fabio, the duo kicked off their musical journey with a party in Hamburg\’s renowned Reeperbahn, which has since spiraled into a project of unbounded creativity and influence. Their recent milestone includes joining forces with Adam Beyer\’s \”DRUMCODE\”, where they released \”Dark Clouds\”, dubbed one of the biggest techno tracks of the year. The track clinched the #1 spot on Beatport and received widespread acclaim, establishing itself as the summer anthem of 2023. Although they have a history of releasing first-class music on renowned labels like Filth On Acid and Terminal M, Teenage Mutants are now focused on conquering the global club scene with their imprint, TRAGEDIE.

Today we are happy to welcome Teenage Mutants on the pages of Tune In Magazine!

Hello, Fabio and Christian! How are things going at this start of the year? What interesting things are happening in your lives at this very moment? And by the way, where in the world are you guys right now?
ー Hi, everyone! At the moment we are in Frankfurt preparing for our set tonight at FREUD CLUB. The year started smoothly! We always do 2-3 weeks of a break, stepping back from the music and enjoying life… Ah, and also a 1-2 studio session haha.

We may be wrong, but 2023 is going to be a difficult year to beat. Can you remind us of some of your greatest achievements?
ー 2023 was music wise the best year for us so far and many dreams come true but we still have our vision that lasts many achievements. The latest was released this Friday, on February 2nd, and it’s a remix for legendary Danish SAFRI DUO on Universal Music. But back in 2023: having our Beatport techno #1 for 4 months and Drumcode was the biggest step for us. We believed that nothing would beat that.

Any clue as to what the next steps will be for Teenage Mutants?
ー This year our label has the focus. We will only release music on our label really frequently, like every 2-3 months. The label needs our attention now and luckily 2023 was too great for us. We have the power now to let it grow.

Back to your roots… How did you get started as a duo? Did you already know each other before? Went out to parties or worked together on some occasion…
ー We met in late 2009 at a party and played together. Then started with some collaborations. Actually really organic and a longtime friendship, which is def. The most important thing is a project like this.

Collaboration is a significant aspect of your work. How does your creative process organize? Can you share your experiences collaborating with other artists, such as memorable moments or lessons learned?
ー Actually it\’s always the same process, we share projects back and forth all the time, nothing special really. Collaborations are super important not only with big names but also with local artists. I mean that\’s how you improve and how you expand your music.

Let’s talk a bit more about your phenomenal debut on Drumcode with “Dark Clouds” feat Heerhorst & Peter Pahn. You earned #1 on Beatport and great support from the whole electronic scene! Share with our readers behind-the-scenes process, inspirations behind the release and your impressions about this work.
ー The vocal was found randomly, then we built the music to it. We have known both for a long time – so was a super easy way of working with friends. But at some point we know this will be big, really big!

Your electrifying release “Fashion” with D3FAI came out after revamping your label TRAGEDIE. Fukkk Offf made a remix of it. Tell us about this collaboration, the history of the release and creative process around it.
ー Actually it was a single supposedly by D3FAi and we did a remix… Then, after some weeks of testing, we checked that the remix could be a bomb and asked D3FAI to make an original out of it. And know what, it definitely was the best decision.

How’s everything going with the TRAGEDIE? Do you have any specific goals or objectives you would like to achieve with the label this year? Still in mind to do some other sustainable fashion collaborations or just focus on music and showcases?
ー All points you mentioned are the main goals. We will grow. Showcases in Tirana, India, Helsinki, Amsterdam… Honestly, fashion line will be the lowest goal at the moment. We will focus mostly on the releases and events.

What gig has been the highlight of your 2023? Do you already know some countries, or some clubs/festivals where we can see you in 2024?
ー Our set at MAGIC GARDEN Amsterdam SOLD OUT with 20k people playing on the MainStage was the shit… What a vibe! 2024 is probably our set at the ECHELON Festival. See you there!

O’kay, see ya! Thank you for the interview!
ー Thank you, guys!
